What is it Like to Attend the State University of New York at Geneseo Chase is a current senior at the State University of New York at Geneseo. He is majoring in Spanish and international relations. He specializes in various levels of Spanish tutoring. Below, he shares his experience at SUNY Geneseo: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Chase: The SUNY Geneseo campus is the perfect size, neither too big nor too small. The freshman side of campus, sometimes referred to as the south side, is somewhat separated from the rest of the campus. However, its still less than a 10-minute walk to the academic buildings. The campus itself is located next to Main Street, which has restaurants and coffee shops. There is also a campus bus system that takes you around to different locations on campus, as well as to the local grocery store. A car is not necessary unless you live off campus as an upperclassman, although most off-campus living options are within walking distance of campus. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Chase: The professors and TAs are available as much as you need them. As with any other college or university, they will not seek you out. Rather, if you need extra help or have any questions, they are a simple email away. How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Chase: The dorm life situation is what you would find at any SUNY school and provides many opportunities for socialization. They recently added a new dorm, which is very modern and nice. They also recently renovated the on-campus dining hall, which has gotten much better since my freshman year. They offer gluten-free and other options for those with dietary limitations. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Chase: From my experience, Geneseo is best known for its science department, specifically physics, as well as their school of education. That is not to say that all other majors are obsolete, just that those are what the school is best known for. I, for example, double major in Spanish and international relations; I have received an excellent education for both of these concentrations. The history and political science professors were all very knowledgeable, engaging, and have superb credentials. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Chase: It was not difficult to meet people as a freshman. Geneseo has a thriving Greek life community, which I would recommend if you enjoy meeting new people. At Geneseo, its really important to get involved in an organization, whether that is a fraternity, sorority, sports team, or club. Since the school itself is rather small, its important to be in something, which in turn facilitates the process of meeting friends. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Chase: Geneseo has a really strong alumni base that helps current students get jobs or internships post-graduation. I have had friends who have gained employment because of a Geneseo connection. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Chase: There are an abundance of places to study on campus. Most academic buildings are open until 2 AM, so there is always a quiet place to study. Describe the surrounding town. Chase: Geneseo is basically in the middle of nowhere in upstate New York, which can be a bit of a culture shock for students coming from the downstate area. The closest big city is Rochester, which is about a half hour away. So, I would say there is not much to do outside the immediate vicinity of campus. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing, because it means that everyone will always be on or around campus, which leads to a more close-knit community. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Chase: I believe there are currently about 5,000 undergrad students. The class sizes were one of the main reasons I chose to attend Geneseo. Obviously, introductory lecture classes and some science classes will have over 100 students per class. Aside from those classes, though, my average class size was about 20-25 students. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Chase: My most memorable experience with a professor was in my Latin American history class my junior year. 10 French Grammar Mistakes Youre Probably Making Suzy S. Mastering all of the French grammar rules can be tricky for beginner students. Below, French teacher Carol Beth L. shares 10 French grammar mistakes youre probably making Making mistakes is inevitable when youre learning a new language. After all, youre learning  complex grammar rules, difficult pronunciation, and long lists of vocabulary words. Students  often make the same French grammar mistakes over and over again. Being aware of these common grammar mistakes will help you  avoid them in the future. Below are some of the  most common French grammar mistakes students  find themselves making, even when they are familiar with the rules. The first few mistakes relate to specific phrases that students have a tendency to misuse, while the rest deal with grammatical patterns that are quite  complex. 1. Greetings In English, when you greet someone in the early morning hours, you typically say “Good morning.” This English greeting doesnt translate literally in French. In fact, the phrase “Bon matin” does not actually exist in the French language. Rather, one would simply say “Bonjour!” when greeting someone. 2. Translations A number of other literal translations can also be tempting. For example, you might want to  express your interest in hobbies, people, and activities. Be careful not to  literally translate the English phrase “I am interested in” into French (eg, Je suis interessée dans). Instead, say “Ça minteresse” (That interests me) or “____ minteresse” (____ interests me). 3. Subject/Object To correctly state that you  miss someone, use the verb “se manquer.” If you want to say “I miss you,” say “Tu me manques.” To say “He misses us,” say “Nous lui manquons.”  Remember that  the English subject and object switch places when translated into French. 4. Agreement Remember to make adjectives properly agree with feminine or plural nouns. For example, the adjective amusant (funny) would be changed to amusante in the feminine singular and amusantes in the feminine plural. In English,  adjectives dont usually change based on the gender or number, so its easy for students  to forget this important French grammar rule. 5. Articles French has more articles than English. Both languages use a and the, but French has separate articles to denote masculine, feminine, and plural of each one. Recall, however, that no neuter exists among French pronouns or articles. For example, a table is most definitely feminine, whereas the wall beside it is quite masculine. In addition to having more articles, French also uses articles more frequently than English. In English, for example, you  would say that We meet regularly on Mondays, but French-speakers would use the appropriate article, saying on se rencontre régulièrement le lundi. 6. Prepositions Remember to use the  correct preposition and  include the appropriate article contraction when necessary. In theory, French prepositions are easier than English prepositions because there are fewer of the most common ones. For example, De translates to of or from, and à  translates to to, at, and sometimes other related location or movement prepositions. A few places to watch out are when youre talking about playing musical instruments (Je joue dun instrument) and sports (Je joue à un sport). Also, be extra careful with those  pesky articles! Relevant contractions include du (de + le), des (de + les), au (à + le) and aux (à + les). De, la, and à la do not contract. 7. Negative Articles Use “il ny a pas de” rather than  â€œil y a pas de”. When using “de” or “de” + an article in the negative, remember that French has lots of exceptions! This is one of them. If there is zero  of something, take out the article. For example, someone could say “Il y a du pain sur la table” (There is bread on the table). In the negative, this would become “Il ny a pas de pain sur la table,” not “Il ny a pas du pain sur la table.” 8. Conjugated Verbs Remember to conjugate your verbs. While we do this  in the English language, its  not as much or in as much detail as French-speakers. This is especially important when youre writing because all those silent final consonants and vowels need attention. The singular forms are the most similar in present tense, but are not always spelled the same, so watch out! 9. Passé composé/ Imparfait The  English distinction between the present perfect and the simple past isnt exactly the same as the French distinction between these two tenses. The passé composé is very commonly used for one-time events in the past. For example, Jai fait mes devoirs hier soir. (I did my homework last night.) The imperfect is used more often for something a person used to do over a period of time in the past. For example, Je faisais mes devoirs tous les jours. (I did my homework every day.) 10. Subjunctive The subjunctive is one of the most difficult verbs in French, if not the most difficult because we dont use it often in English. Many of us anglophones arent even aware of the fact that we use it at all. The first step is to understand the situations in which it is used, and then practice, observe, and correct oneself. Then practice some more, and observe some more, and correct oneself more. Give yourself time to perfect this French grammar rule, but also insist on understanding and using it correctly. Gradually, you will be able to use it successfully. These  arent  the only French grammar mistakes out there, but they are certainly worthy of attention. Keep your eyes open and your ears peeled for other mistakes, and correct them when you can. In no time, you will  be well on your way to excellent (and impressive) French usage! The Minor 7 Chord (m7) The minor 7 chord can be used to replace most minor chords.   As an added benefit, the minor 7 built off from the ii chord can also be used to replace the IV chord.   Here are five open position minor 7 chords. How to Get a Good List of References You will inevitably be asked to give a list of references throughout your many application processes. This shouldnt be any shocking news to you, but if you are still new to the ways of the job search, you should be aware of the proper etiquette required to get and use a reference. Never blindly assume someone will be your reference and then give their information to a potential employer. There are some cases where this may be okay, for instance if you have been working for a certain company for a very long time and have a close and comfortable enough relationship with your boss that it would almost be silly to ask their permission. Ultimately, you have to be the judge of those things. But in many situations, its just safer to confront your employer directly about using them as a reference before you actually do it. Another reason this is important is because you never know what kind of contact information a potential employer will request for your references. Sometimes they just need an email address, other times theyll want a phone number, and many times they will want both. If you never discussed this with your references, you may find yourself in a pinch and having to list a company email or phone number. Itll be easier for everybody all around if you have a direct phone number and email address for each of your references. Think of it this way: you want to make it as easy as possible for potential employers to get a hold of your references. They may have to go through several unnecessary hurdles to get this person on the phone if they are being transferred from department to department and being put on hold for minutes at a time. No employer whos going through many applicants has or wants to spend the time on that. Plus, your references company probably wont appreciate all the hassle either . Lets say that for some reason you have come across direct contact information for your reference before having the references discussion with them. Dont think you are in the clear and no longer need to speak to them about it anymore. For all you know, this person may not like that particular email address or phone number given out to the public. If they are contacted by a stranger through those lines of communication and find out you are the reason, you may risk them resenting you for it. Hey, wasnt the whole point of this that they would give you a good reference in the first place? Dont let it slip away from you so easily. As long as you politely ask these people if they will be your reference, get the proper contact information that they say is appropriate, and be very gracious for their help, your references list will be a piece of cake. None of this takes long to do, but that doesnt take away from its significance. You picked these people because you feel they will sing your praises; going about this process is the way to maintain that relationship.

See what he had to say about his alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? James: Harvards campus is located in Cambridge Massachusetts, next to Boston. Thus, it provides a perfect balance of urban opportunities and the serenity of a quieter, less hectic environment. I dont see urban and safe as antonyms. The campus is both urban and reasonably safe. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? James: When I was an undergraduate, professors were mostly quite remote figures, except for certain subjects where the departments and classes were smaller, and professors therefore were more available. Professors were typically illustrious figures who lectured and otherwise dedicated themselves to research. Consorting with undergraduates was not high on their list of priorities. Obviously, there were plenty of exceptions, and graduate studentsoften very accomplished scholars in their own rightcould be very cordial and helpful. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? James: I found dorm life a bit disappointing, but it was probably adequate. Given the size of the school, it is difficult to generalize about student life. However, MIT was reputed to have livelier parties and socializing opportunities, which says something. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? James: Some programs certainly were rumoured to be more prestigious: Social Studies, History and Literature. To some extent, the undergraduate majors followed the fortunes of the graduate schools. For instance, English was reputedly a somewhat disorganized and fractious department, with numerous tensions between the faculty, and this seemed to affect the undergraduate experience in subtle ways. However, in almost all cases the university made an effort to ensure that undergraduates were taken care of. My advice is to pick a smaller department and less common majors. That was the path to more attention and TLC from the departments. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? James: Meeting people was not hard, but depended to a considerable extent on the initiative of individual students, like most aspects of life at Harvard, intellectual or social. The Greek Life consisted of a few clubs that only were sufficient to include a fraction of undergraduatespresumably rich and connected ones; I would say that these clubs were not a huge factor in undergraduate life. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus?The Office of Career Services was very helpful and accessible. James: Certainly, there was plenty of recruiting on campus, though the efforts of the CIA and other government agencies to do so was a political hot potato, as I recall. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? James: I remember a wealth of libraries and places to study. Students there are very fortunate in this sense. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? James: Cambridge is a quaint, manageable town with fine cultural and gastronomic resources. Boston, nearby, is big enough to accommodate any reasonable desires for entertainment, cultural immersion or escape. The diversity of these towns culturally and racially was quite rich, though Boston and Cambridge when I was there were both still quite racially divided, echoing the tensions and turmoil of the 70s and 80s, perhaps. Whether or not this is still the case, I dont know. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? James: The student body is large, and class sizes could also be big, as in one Political Philosophy class with c. 700 people. Although this question does not ask me about the quality of my peers, only their quantity, I probably learned more from my fellow students, and that despite containing a disproportionate number of socially inept and tunnel-visioned overachievers, the student body is a remarkably fascinating and impressive bunch of students with an enormous range of interests and accomplishments. I was very impressed by them on the whole. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. James: The Political Philosophy professor of the above-mentioned class of c. 700 people (Michael Sandel) was very charismatic, and the well-conceived and organized class stimulated my thinking, due to his teaching and the excellent reading list. I wrote him a quixotic letter challenging the courses central communitarian premises, and received an invitation to come speak with him in his office. Though the conversation was brief due to my being overawed and tongue-tied, it was an honor to be taken this seriously. Check out James tutoring profile.
